Hugli, August 10: The case of alleged assault, vandalism, and extortion against a businessman in Tarkeshwar, located in West Bengal’s Hugli district, has gained significant attention. BJP legislator Santoo Pan condemned the incident and urged the police to arrest the two named accused and take strict action against them.
Pan described the incident as deeply shameful and painful, emphasizing that Tarkeshwar is known as the city of Lord Shiva. He expressed concern over the reported extortion attempt against a businessman, stating that such actions are unacceptable, especially in a state that advocates for good governance.
According to reports, the businessman faced demands for weekly extortion payments. Regardless of his political affiliations, Pan asserted that no businessman should endure such treatment. After the businessman refused to comply with the extortion demand, he was allegedly assaulted, and his shop was vandalized. An employee working in the shop was also injured during the incident.
The legislator stated that such extortion practices cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The BJP’s stance is clear: there should be no room for extortion and corruption in the state. On Monday, while visiting Tarkeshwar, Pan assessed the local situation and met with the distressed businessman, who expressed his fear of reporting the incident to the police. He cited previous experiences where complaints led to further violence, which deterred him from seeking help.
Pan encouraged the businessman to file a police report and called the police to the scene to ensure his complaint was registered. He publicly demanded the arrest of both accused individuals, asserting that anyone who takes the law into their own hands must face severe consequences. He emphasized the necessity of action against the accused to prevent future occurrences and to instill a sense of security among business owners.
Pan reiterated that the BJP leadership has consistently advocated for the eradication of extortion and corruption culture in the state. From the Chief Minister to the party’s state leadership, there has been a public commitment against forced payments from any businessman or citizen. He raised concerns about the persistence of such incidents despite the clear message from party leadership against extortion.
The legislator concluded that differing political ideologies do not justify violence or extortion against any businessman. He called for an impartial investigation by the police to ensure accountability for the perpetrators.
