Kolkata, August 10: On Monday, a march organized by the Left Front reached the District Magistrate’s office in Bankura. Tensions escalated as party activists clashed with police. Protesters broke through barricades and entered the premises of the District Magistrate’s office.
Various organizations within the Left Front called for the march across the state, demanding 15 key issues. These included the inclusion of all female applicants in the Annapurna scheme and fair pricing for crops such as rice, potatoes, and jute.
Starting from the Hindu School ground in Bankura, the activists attempted to access the District Magistrate’s office. Police set up barricades to prevent the procession from advancing. When demonstrators tried to breach the barricades, violent clashes ensued. Ultimately, the protesters succeeded in breaking through and entered the office grounds.
Following the incident, a heavy police presence, including central forces, arrived at the District Magistrate’s office. The protesters then sat down on the road, continuing their demonstration before eventually dispersing.
CPI(M) leader Amia Patra criticized the state government, claiming it was all talk with no action. She alleged that no one was receiving the promised hundred days of work and that farmers were not getting support prices for rice, potatoes, and jute. She also noted that many women were left out of the Annapurna scheme.
Patra emphasized that when people take to the streets, no authority can stop them.
Similar marches were held by Leftist activists in districts such as Birbhum, Jhargram, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, Purulia, Malda, Murshidabad, and others. Most events concluded without any untoward incidents.
