Mumbai, August 10: Senior Congress leader Bhai Jagatap has voiced support for Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi‘s statements regarding the alleged brutality against students in Delhi. He has called for accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this matter.
Bhai Jagatap stated that during the protests on July 20, Delhi police officers resorted to lathi charges, fired pellet guns, and deployed tear gas on students, resulting in multiple injuries. He emphasized that Rahul Gandhi is rightly demanding accountability from Amit Shah, who has not appeared in the House. Jagatap insists that a fair investigation into the entire incident should be conducted under the Supreme Court’s supervision.
In an interview, Bhai Jagatap backed Rahul Gandhi’s claims, noting that students suffered injuries from pellet gun pellets and tear gas. He mentioned that one student even lost an eye. The central government must be held responsible, as pellet guns cannot be fired without the Home Minister’s directive. The accountability lies with them, as it is their government.
He reiterated that the investigation should be overseen by a Supreme Court judge. Even if the central government forms a Special Investigation Team (SIT), questions regarding the investigation’s impartiality will arise. Therefore, a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry is essential. Jagatap claimed that the Home Minister’s approval is necessary for using pellet guns, and the police commissioner cannot issue such orders without the Home Ministry’s consent.
Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Commonwealth Games medalists, Bhai Jagatap praised the impressive performances of the country’s youth in sports. He highlighted the achievements of female boxers and judokas, as well as a farmer’s son from Maharashtra who won a medal in running, bringing pride to the nation. He believes that honoring athletes is commendable and boosts children’s morale.
Bhai Jagatap also raised concerns about the FCRA bill, stating that there are already laws in place to monitor foreign funding for various activities.
On the meeting between NCP (SP) MPs and PM Modi, he remarked that discussions have been ongoing for the past two to three years, with nothing new emerging. These talks began during the internal division of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). However, he stressed that discussions on such matters should occur within the India Alliance, and a unified decision is desired.
