Kolkata, August 10: Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators staged a protest in the West Bengal Assembly on Monday against the attack on former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that occurred in the North 24 Parganas district’s Halishahar on Sunday.
The legislators chanted slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and criticized the police administration. They demanded justice for Mamata Banerjee and resolved to hold protest rallies across Bengal. The legislators also condemned the police regarding the death of a TMC worker in custody in Halishahar.
Senior leaders, including Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Kunal Ghosh, Biman Banerjee, and Naina Bandyopadhyay, led the protest march. They carried banners and posters denouncing the attack on Banerjee.
Following the incident, the TMC’s core yet minority faction decided to organize protests statewide. These marches will take place in all blocks of the state.
According to an insider, the TMC is intensifying its movement across West Bengal, focusing on the events of the previous day.
It is noteworthy that the Halishahar police arrested Birju Keot, the husband of a former TMC councilor from Ward No. 23 of Kanchrapara municipality, on multiple charges, including extortion. He was presented in court on Friday, where a judge remanded him to five days of police custody.
However, it was reported on Saturday that Birju Keot died in police custody. His wife alleged that he was beaten by police while in lock-up.
On Sunday, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee visited Kanchrapara to meet the family of the deceased TMC worker, Birju Keot, accompanied by Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen.
During her journey, she faced protests, with allegations that shoes and mud were thrown at her vehicle. Mamata claimed that BJP-supported miscreants were responsible for this act.
Stones were also hurled at her car. Mamata asserted that had the windows been open, she could have sustained serious injuries or even lost her life.
