Armed Robbery at SBI Branch in Surat: ₹50 Lakh Stolen in Broad Daylight

Surat, April 28: An alarming robbery occurred at a branch of the State Bank of India in the Varachha area of Surat. CCTV footage captured the moment armed individuals entered the bank one by one and fled with a substantial amount of cash.

Police confirmed that approximately ₹50 lakh was stolen during the incident.

According to authorities, five to six armed robbers arrived on motorcycles and targeted the bank while cash was being delivered via a CMS van. The CCTV footage reportedly shows the suspects entering the bank, threatening staff, and escaping with bags of cash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Alok Kumar stated that the robbers used weapons during the heist and disabled the bank’s security system. “Around ₹50 lakh was stolen from this branch. The suspects arrived on motorcycles. We are investigating and working to identify and apprehend them. They snatched an officer’s phone at gunpoint, preventing immediate contact with the police. They also disabled the alarm system. Police arrived promptly after receiving the information,” he said.

Investigations are underway to confirm whether firearms were indeed used, as suggested by initial reports. Teams from Zone-1 police and the crime branch are actively involved in the investigation, and nearby districts have been alerted.

Authorities are tracing the escape routes taken by the robbers after the heist. According to personnel involved in the CMS cash delivery, the robbery occurred while cash was being brought into the bank.

Gunman Shivpujan Singh, who was present outside during the incident, remarked, “We had brought cash and were at the bank to deposit it. One gunman entered the bank. The incident happened inside.”

The police are also investigating whether this robbery was premeditated and if the cash movement was intentionally targeted. Efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
