Indian Stock Market Closed for Gandhi Jayanti Observance

Mumbai, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market will be closed on Friday, October 2, in observance of Gandhi Jayanti. Trading will not take place on either the National Stock Exchange (NSE) or the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) during this time.

All segments of trading, including equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives, will be inactive. Additionally, the commodity derivatives segment will also remain closed for both the morning and evening sessions.

The stock market will reopen on October 5, following the weekend. The next scheduled holiday for the market is on October 20 for Dussehra. Other upcoming closures include Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and Christmas on December 25.

On the previous trading day, the Indian stock market closed in the red due to rising energy prices and increased bond yields and interest rates. The Nifty index fell by 198.50 points, or 0.88%, ending at 22,421.95.

Among the stocks that saw the most significant declines were Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, Shriram Finance, Tata Steel, Grasim Industries, Eicher Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra. Conversely, shares of Infosys, HDFC Life, HDFC Bank, SBI Life, Max Health, and TCS experienced notable gains.

Experts attribute the market’s downturn primarily to external factors, as bond yields have reached multi-year highs and crude oil prices remain elevated, raising concerns about the economic outlook for 2026-27. Additionally, domestic investors are cautious ahead of the second-quarter results and the Reserve Bank of India’s policy announcement next week.

Analysts predict that second-quarter earnings may be weaker compared to the first quarter, as the previous quarter benefited from lower operating costs that may not be replicated this time.
