
Shillong, June 4: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over the 73rd full session of the Northeast Council (NEC) in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, on Thursday.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister of State for Development of Northeast Region (DoNER) and Vice Chairman of the NEC, will also attend the meeting.
A senior NEC official indicated that governors and chief ministers from all eight northeastern states are expected to participate in this meeting of the 55-year-old regional council. The NEC plays a crucial role in planning and coordinating development initiatives across the region.
Earlier, the NEC announced on its ‘X’ handle, “This important meeting will bring leaders and stakeholders together to discuss key initiatives for the development, connectivity, and sustainable growth of the Northeast region.”
Before the full session, Mizoram Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.) reviewed the state’s preparations for the 73rd NEC session in Shillong on Monday. This review meeting took place in the Lok Bhavan conference room in Aizawl.
During the meeting, the Governor emphasized the central government’s strong commitment to the development of northeastern states and stressed the need to ensure that Mizoram’s development priorities receive appropriate attention during the upcoming session. He urged all relevant departments to make every effort to effectively present the state’s key concerns, proposals, and development needs before the NEC.
David Lalthanthluanga, Secretary of the Planning and Program Implementation Department, provided a detailed presentation on the follow-up actions related to decisions and initiatives from the 72nd NEC session held in Agartala, Tripura, in December 2024. He also informed the meeting about the status of various ongoing projects being implemented under the NEC and the Ministry of Development of Northeast Region.
These include NEC-funded projects, NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (OTRI), and PM-DIVINE projects, all aimed at strengthening infrastructure and accelerating socio-economic development in the state.
Officials further discussed and finalized key issues and proposals to be raised during the NEC full session, with a particular focus on the overall welfare of Mizoram, infrastructure development, and economic growth.
Attendees of the review meeting included Sudhir Kumar, Principal Secretary of the General Administration Department, and senior officials from all key departments.
