Kolkata, May 8: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to arrive in Kolkata on Friday ahead of the formation of a new government in West Bengal. Reports indicate that he will hold a meeting with the newly elected legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where the name of the Chief Minister will be decided. This meeting is a crucial step towards establishing the government in the state.
During the BJP legislative meeting, the leader of the house will be elected. This process will determine the next Chief Minister’s name. As the party prepares to form its government in the state for the first time, senior central leaders are overseeing this election process.
The formal term of the previous West Bengal Assembly ended on Thursday. Following this, the Governor issued a notification to dissolve the 17th West Bengal Assembly.
Despite the assembly’s dissolution, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has retained her title as ‘Chief Minister of West Bengal’ on social media platforms. She continues to identify herself as the current Chief Minister on Facebook, Instagram, and X.
In the recently concluded assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee and her party faced a significant defeat. Banerjee lost her own seat in the Bhawanipur constituency. However, she has firmly refused to resign from the Chief Minister’s position following the election results.
This time, the BJP has secured an absolute majority in West Bengal. The party won 207 out of 293 assembly seats, maintaining all 77 seats it won in 2021 and adding 130 new seats to its tally.
Currently, the BJP is focused on preparing for the formation of a new government in West Bengal, with the announcement of the new Chief Minister’s name expected after the legislative meeting.
