New Delhi, April 1: The formal process for the 2027 Census has begun in India. On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah filled out the self-enumeration form, encouraging citizens to actively participate in this significant national initiative.
Shah shared a video on the social media platform ‘X’ while completing the form at his residence in Delhi under the housing census.
In his message, the Home Minister emphasized that the census plays a crucial role in accelerating the country’s development journey. It ensures that government schemes effectively reach the last person in line.
He urged citizens to provide accurate and necessary information. Shah also mentioned that census teams will soon visit homes to collect data, making public cooperation essential.
In his post, he included a link to the official census website, motivating people to fill out the form themselves to streamline the process.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his experience of filling out the self-enumeration form, urging citizens to participate in the initiative.
The government believes that accurate and updated census data is vital for policy-making, better resource allocation, and ensuring inclusive development. Therefore, special emphasis is being placed on making the 2027 Census a comprehensive and technologically advanced process.
This initiative is particularly significant as the 2027 Census will be India’s first fully digital census, moving away from the traditional paper-based system that has been in place for years. It will be conducted in two phases under the Census Act of 1948.
The first phase, known as House Listing and Housing Census (HLH), focuses on collecting data related to housing conditions, properties, amenities, and household details through 33 notified questions.
A notable feature of this census is the introduction of self-enumeration. Citizens can voluntarily submit their household information online through a dedicated portal. This 15-day window precedes the door-to-door census in every state and union territory. The aim is to enhance accuracy, reduce errors, and ensure maximum public participation.
