Gandhinagar, April 10: A three-and-a-half-year-old Labrador named ‘Check’ from the Gujarat Police has made headlines by winning a gold and a bronze medal at the 69th All India Police Duty Meet (AIPDM) 2025-26. This prestigious event took place recently in Nagpur, showcasing the skills of police K9 units from across the country.
The competition, held in March-April 2026, featured participants from various police departments, forensic experts, and law enforcement personnel. Events included explosive and narcotics detection, tracking, agility, and obedience, highlighting the dedication and competence of trained dogs.
This achievement is particularly significant for the Gujarat Police, as it marks the first time in 16 years that a police dog has secured a gold medal at the national level.
On Friday, DGP K.L.N. Rao congratulated ‘Check’, his handler Ramesh Khanth, and dog training consultant Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore at the police headquarters in Gandhinagar.
According to police officials, a total of six dogs from the Gujarat Police participated in three distinct categories: tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection, with two dogs in each category.
Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore stated, “Our dog ‘Check’ won the gold medal in the tracking category and also secured bronze overall in tracking. This is a moment of immense pride for the Gujarat Police, for which we worked hard.”
In the tracking event, 45 dogs from state police and paramilitary forces participated, with ‘Check’ emerging as the gold medalist. Overall, more than 200 dogs competed in various categories throughout the event.
Prior to the national competition, the Gujarat Police began preparations well in advance. Under the guidance of DGP (Training) Dr. Neerja Gotru, a state-level police dog competition was organized months earlier.
A senior police officer noted that selected dogs underwent specialized training, maintained a rigorous training schedule, and received proper care. Nine dogs were shortlisted for this process, with six ultimately participating in the national championship.
It is noteworthy that approximately 160 police dogs are deployed across various districts in Gujarat, trained for critical tasks such as explosive detection, narcotics detection, tracking criminals, identifying alcohol, and conducting attack operations.
