American Journalist Kidnapped in Baghdad, US Blames Iran-Linked Militia

Baghdad, April 1: An American journalist has been kidnapped in Baghdad, Iraq. The US State Department has confirmed suspicions that an Iran-backed militia group is involved, raising new concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the region.

The State Department stated that it is actively working to ensure the swift release of the American journalist.

Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, posted on social media, “The State Department is aware of the kidnapping of an American journalist in Baghdad. We had previously warned this individual about potential threats and will continue to coordinate with the FBI to ensure their prompt release.”

He noted that the militia group Kata’ib Hezbollah is suspected of being involved in the kidnapping, and an individual linked to the group has been detained by Iraqi authorities.

Johnson reiterated that Iraq remains under a Level 4 travel advisory, warning Americans not to travel to the country under any circumstances and advising those present to leave immediately.

He urged all Americans, including journalists, to adhere to travel advisories.

Earlier, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior confirmed in a statement that the journalist was abducted by “unknown individuals” in Baghdad. Security forces have arrested a suspect and seized the alleged vehicle used in the kidnapping. The ministry stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional individuals and ensure the journalist’s safe release.

The kidnapped journalist has been identified as Shelly Kittleson. She is a freelance reporter who has contributed to publications such as Media Advocacy Organization and AI Monitor.

Kittleson is known for her extensive reporting, particularly in conflict zones in Syria and Iraq, where she has worked as a freelancer for several years.

AI Monitor expressed deep concern over her kidnapping and demanded her “safe and immediate release.” “We stand in support of her important reporting and call for her swift return so she can continue her vital work.”

According to the International Women’s Media Foundation, Kittleson is a “legitimate journalist” with significant experience in the Middle East and is currently based in Rome.
