Mumbai, April 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a large public gathering in Gogamukh, Assam, on Wednesday, marking the kickoff of the election campaign following the announcement of the Assam Assembly elections.
In his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the enthusiastic crowd, the energy of the youth, and the blessings from mothers and sisters as clear indicators that a victory for the BJP is assured. He stated, “With your blessings, I have had the opportunity to achieve a hat-trick as Prime Minister. I am here for the third time, and now, Assam will also witness a hat-trick for the BJP government.”
Modi described this election as a step towards transforming ‘Developed Assam into Developed India.’ He expressed confidence that the BJP and NDA would return to power for a third consecutive term. He also targeted the Congress party, asserting that their defeat is inevitable and that their self-proclaimed prince is heading towards a century of electoral losses.
The Prime Minister referenced the development in Assam over the past decade, first under Sarbananda Sonowal’s leadership and now under Himanta Biswa Sarma, emphasizing a new era of good governance and service in the state.
He noted that over 2.2 million families have received permanent housing in recent years. The BJP’s manifesto promises that those who have yet to benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana will also receive a permanent home. Additionally, a guarantee was made to provide housing for another 1.5 million families in the future.
In a significant commitment to education, Modi announced that children from low-income families would receive free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels.
Discussing women’s empowerment, he introduced the ‘Lakhpati Didi Campaign,’ reporting that approximately 300,000 women in Assam have become ‘Lakhpati Baideu’ under this initiative. The NDA government aims to elevate 4 million more women to this status. The Assam BJP plans to expand the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme, adding more benefits.
The Orunodoi scheme, launched on October 2, 2020, is a key direct benefit transfer initiative aimed at empowering women and eradicating poverty in the state.
Modi also emphasized the importance of preserving Assam’s identity and culture. He stated that implementing a Uniform Civil Code and protecting the traditions of tribal communities and Sixth Schedule areas would strengthen Assam’s identity.
He addressed the flood issue, revealing that over ₹18,000 crores have been allocated for the ‘Flood-Free Assam Mission.’ He assured that the BJP government is investing hundreds of crores to construct modern embankments to provide a permanent solution to the flooding problem.
In the agricultural sector, he mentioned that around 1.1 million farmers in Assam have received over ₹730 crores in claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Modi remarked that Assam was once known only for tea, but now it is rapidly advancing in technology. He announced that a semiconductor plant will soon begin producing chips in Assam, positioning the state as a significant hub for modern manufacturing.
He stated, “In the future, mobile phones, vehicles, TVs, and refrigerators will operate using chips made in Assam. This is our roadmap for a developed Assam.”
Targeting the Congress party again, he noted that during their 60-65 years of governance, only three bridges were built over the Brahmaputra River, while the double-engine government has constructed five major bridges in just 10-11 years. Modi highlighted that the lack of bridges has caused significant hardships for the people, resulting in loss of lives.
He concluded by stating that Assam was once known for violence and unrest, but now it is recognized for development. He noted that during the BJP government, thousands of youth have laid down their arms and returned to the mainstream.
