Allegations of Illegal Tree Cutting in Mornis Asrewali Village Spark Outrage

Chandigarh, June 20: In Haryana, while the government encourages the public to plant trees, a shocking incident has emerged from Asrewali village in the Morni area. Over 3,500 trees have reportedly been cut down, raising significant concerns among social activists.

Lawyer Sanjeev Chaudhary spoke out about the situation. He accused officials of large-scale illegal logging in protected forest areas of Panchkula district and called for an independent investigation. He also questioned the reinstatement of suspended forest officials during the inquiry.

Chaudhary noted that approximately 2,000 eucalyptus and 1,500 acacia trees were felled in the Morni region. He commended the Haryana government for taking immediate action upon learning of the incident, which he deemed commendable.

However, he expressed concern that the same officials who were suspended were reinstated shortly after, casting doubt on the integrity of the investigation. According to Chaudhary, if these suspended officials are back in their positions, a fair inquiry is unlikely, and the ongoing tree cutting may continue unchecked.

He urged the government to avoid assigning such officials, who tarnish the government’s image, to this area. Instead, he advocated for the deployment of officers who are genuinely committed to wildlife and environmental conservation.

Highlighting the Morni area as a vital wildlife habitat, Chaudhary emphasized the need for proper care and management. He mentioned plans to meet with Chief Minister Nayab Saini to present a memorandum regarding the issue, noting that the case is currently pending with the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
