New Delhi, August 22: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken notice of allegations against the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. She is accused of soliciting a bribe of ₹5 crores to suppress a rape case. NHRC member Priyank Kanungo provided detailed insights during a conversation regarding this serious matter.
Kanungo stated, “We received a complaint from an activist group. They informed us that former Punjab High Court judge Ranjit Singh has alleged that the Chief Minister’s wife is demanding ₹5 crores to bury the rape case. This is a grave issue. If individuals in high government positions and their family members engage in bribery to silence victims, we risk leading the country into a state devoid of law and order. Therefore, we have taken cognizance of this matter and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and DGP of Punjab, requesting a report.”
He added, “Since this case involves the Chief Minister’s family and allegations against Bhagwant Mann’s wife, we have also notified the Women’s Safety Division of the Home Ministry.”
Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding commented, “I have stated that allegations have been made against the CM’s wife. If the NHRC has requested a report from the Chief Secretary and Punjab DGP, they must submit their findings and clarify the facts related to this case. The Human Rights Commission should explain what transpired, why this issue was raised, and the basis for these allegations. All this information should be disclosed.”
Senior BJP leader Vijay Sampla remarked, “This is a very serious matter, as these allegations have been made by retired judge Ranjit Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. When a retired judge is the complainant, it is generally assumed that they have thoroughly examined all legal aspects before making such claims.”
Previously, Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal mentioned in a post on X, “The allegations of ₹5 crores in corruption against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife are so serious that the NHRC had to intervene. I eagerly await the ‘action report’ from the Chief Secretary and DGP of Punjab. The deadline is two weeks. Save this tweet. I will inquire again on September 5 regarding the AAP in Punjab.”
