Chandigarh, February 16: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of misusing government funds to organize a rally in Moga.
SAD has urged Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take note of this issue.
Senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema stated that the ruling AAP government is engaging in deceptive politics by linking its rally to the ‘War on Drugs’ initiative, which he claims is merely a ploy to kickstart their campaign for the 2027 assembly elections.
He remarked, “Not only was government money used to transport people to the rally, but the entire event was funded by the government. This occurred while the rally was led by AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s Delhi leadership, who have no involvement in Punjab’s governance.”
Cheema condemned this type of politics as shameful, noting that the rally featured purely political speeches and unfounded accusations against political opponents.
He called on both the Governor and the Election Commission to initiate the process of recovering the full amount spent by AAP on the rally, as it was conducted against regulations and cannot be deemed a government event.
The Akali Dal leader also criticized the manner in which the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police were compelled to address the political rally.
He warned that this would politicize the state’s bureaucracy, which is detrimental to democracy. He added that the Punjab government would force district-level officials to address political rallies and become integral to AAP. In such a scenario, fair and impartial elections cannot be expected.
