Lucknow, February 23: Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai has accused the BJP of undermining democratic values and engaging in politics driven by money.

Regarding the FIR filed against Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, Rai stated that this move will ultimately cost the BJP dearly. He emphasized that Swami Avimukteshwaranand has consistently spoken the truth and has been vocal about issues related to temples in Kashi. Rai alleged that the actions taken against him are an attempt to tarnish his character, which the public will not accept.

In an interview with a news agency, the Congress leader claimed that the BJP is attempting to divide people solely through financial means. He criticized the trend of distributing money and offering bribes to influence voters during elections, labeling it as detrimental to democracy.

Rai remarked, “Distributing money to secure votes is a murder of democracy. During the Bihar elections, ₹10,000 was deposited into women’s accounts. This method is not democratic.” He asserted that the BJP is becoming a party of corrupt individuals.

Targeting the Uttar Pradesh government, Rai accused it of focusing solely on Hindu-Muslim issues. He referenced an incident in Badaun, where three Muslim youths were beaten by an individual associated with a certain organization, and criticized the lack of stringent action taken in this case. He mentioned that Congress General Secretary Avinash Pandey visited the victims and assured them of the party’s support.

Rai also condemned the government for the recent demolition of a shrine at King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow and for allowing the university’s 200-year-old building to fall into disrepair.

He urged the government to preserve historical and cultural heritage and respect local traditions. Rai insisted that the atmosphere in educational institutions should not be compromised and called for an end to such actions.
