Trump Takes Action Against False Made in America Claims with New Executive Order

Washington, March 14: President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday aimed at cracking down on companies and vendors that falsely advertise their products as “Made in America.”

Under this order, federal agencies are directed to take strict action against manufacturers and online sellers who misleadingly promote their products as American-made.

According to the White House, this initiative is designed to protect consumers and businesses that genuinely manufacture their products in the United States.

The order states, “American citizens have the right to know whether the products marketed as ‘Made in America’ are actually made in the United States.”

The new directive instructs the Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prioritize cases involving claims such as “Made in America,” “Made in the USA,” or similar assertions.

Additionally, the FTC may propose new regulations for online marketplaces. If an online platform fails to verify the country of origin claims for a product, it could be considered “deceptive or unfair trade practices” under U.S. law.

The administration emphasizes that this action addresses issues arising in the rapidly growing digital marketplace. Many foreign manufacturers and vendors exploit patriotic sentiments by marketing their products as American-made, while they are actually produced in other countries.

The White House stated that such false claims mislead consumers and harm American companies that manufacture their products domestically.

The new order also emphasizes stricter regulations on federal procurement. Agencies managing government contracts will be required to periodically review the country of origin claims for products sold to the federal government.

If a vendor is found to have falsely claimed American origin, their products will be removed from the government procurement list, and the company may be referred to the Department of Justice for potential action.

The White House noted that this order aims to strengthen consumer trust and protect companies that manufacture in America.

The administration asserts that this initiative is part of a broader economic policy to promote domestic manufacturing. During his first term, Trump issued several executive orders to advance policies like “Buy American and Hire American” and utilized tariffs to safeguard sectors such as steel, aluminum, copper, and automotive.
