Noida, February 17: The air quality index (AQI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) has plunged into the red zone as wind speeds have decreased. Areas in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad are experiencing severe pollution levels.
The meteorological department has forecast light rain and strong winds on February 18, which may improve the AQI afterward. Data from various monitoring stations in Delhi indicate a concerning situation.
In Anand Vihar, the AQI reached 319, while Ashok Vihar recorded 337, Bawana 321, Burari Crossing 345, and Chandni Chowk 302, all falling within the hazardous category. Some areas in the Indraprastha region also reported severe pollution levels. Alipur recorded an AQI of 242, DTU at 271, and Dwarka Sector-8 at 234, which are classified as orange zone levels. In Aya Nagar, the AQI was 158, and at CRRI Mathura Road, it was 189, both in the yellow zone. This indicates that pollutants have accumulated in the atmosphere due to low wind speeds.
In Noida, Sector 125 reported an AQI of 286, Sector 62 at 223, Sector 1 at 234, and Sector 116 at 232. Most areas here fall into the orange zone, yet the situation remains alarming. Ghaziabad is facing even worse pollution levels, with Indirapuram at 324, Vasundhara at 301, and Sanjay Nagar at 251, keeping Indirapuram and Vasundhara in the red zone.
According to the meteorological department, the maximum temperature on February 17 is expected to be 30 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 13 degrees. On February 18, the forecast predicts a maximum of 27 degrees and a minimum of 14 degrees. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, is anticipated in the morning of February 18, with a possibility of light rain in the afternoon as well.
The forecast for February 19 indicates a maximum temperature of 27 degrees and a minimum of 13 degrees, while February 20 and 21 are expected to be 28/13 degrees. Clear weather and fog conditions are likely from February 19 to 21. The meteorological department suggests that the rain and strong winds on February 18 will help reduce the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere, potentially leading to an improvement in the AQI.
