Air Quality in NCR and Western UP Turns Severe, Many Areas in Red Zone

NOIDA: Air pollution levels have reached a critical stage not only in Delhi-NCR but also in surrounding areas. According to the latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Meteorological Department, most parts of the NCR have been classified under the red zone, posing serious health risks to the public.

In Ghaziabad, all active monitoring stations recorded extremely poor air quality. AQI values were 388 in Indirapuram, 386 in Loni, 386 in Vasundhara, and 238 in Sanjay Nagar, all falling under the poor category.

Noida is facing similar conditions. Sector-1 recorded an AQI of 362, Sector-116 had 354, and Sector-125 showed 358, all within the red zone. Sector-62 recorded an AQI of 288, placing it in the orange zone, but it is still considered unsafe for health.

Several areas in Delhi are also experiencing very poor air quality. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 381, Ashok Vihar 374, Chandni Chowk 363, Mundka 386, and Nehru Nagar 389. Other locations such as Jahangirpuri (388), Bawana (335), and around Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range (340) also reported high AQI levels. Meanwhile, Lodhi Road and Mandir Marg recorded relatively lower AQIs of 220 and 269 respectively.

The Meteorological Department attributes the situation to the influence of western disturbances, causing dense fog and moisture in the plains. This weather condition traps pollutants in the atmosphere for longer durations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 22 degrees Celsius on February 4, with dense fog expected in the morning and afternoon. Moderate fog is predicted on February 5, followed by light fog on February 6.

Experts warn that until wind speeds increase and the weather clears up, the chances of pollution levels dropping remain low. Doctors advise children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory illnesses to stay indoors, use masks, and avoid going outside during morning and evening hours.
