India and Germany Collaborate on Green AI in Health Technology

New Delhi, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : A recent workshop held at IIT Delhi brought together experts from India and Germany to discuss the innovative applications of Green AI in healthcare. The event, which took place on September 3 and 4, focused on utilizing technology without harming the environment, particularly in the realm of mental health.

During the discussions, it became clear that large, complex computer models are not necessary for mental health applications. Instead, smaller, private device models were highlighted as more effective, as they ensure the complete security of sensitive patient data.

The collaboration aimed to explore new AI applications in areas such as medical imaging, clinical decision support, and multilingual health services. Identifying the technical infrastructure and challenges associated with AI in various healthcare systems was also a key objective.

Additionally, the workshop emphasized enhancing academic, clinical, and industrial cooperation between India and Germany while laying out a roadmap for future joint research. A major focus was on understanding the environmental impacts of generative AI in healthcare and developing energy-efficient models that can be practically applied in real-world scenarios.

The event was sponsored by the Indo-German Science and Technology Center, a joint initiative of India’s Department of Science and Technology and Germany’s Ministry of Education. Over 30 experts participated, with IIT Delhi’s Professor Tanmay Chakraborty and Professor Irina Gurevich from TU Darmstadt leading the discussions. Dr. Kusumita Arora, director of the Indo-German Science and Technology Center, noted that this initiative aims to address shared challenges in Green AI and health by leveraging the strengths of both nations.

Professor Chakraborty emphasized that the next phase of AI development should not solely focus on creating large models but rather on building systems that are sustainable, reliable, and accessible. Professor Gurevich added an important perspective on mental health, stating that Green AI means more than just energy efficiency; it also involves using smaller, on-device models that securely manage sensitive data locally. In the future, doctors, patients, and AI will need to collaborate as a team.
