Air Quality Deteriorates in Delhi-NCR Amid Fog and Cold

Noida, February 3: Residents of Delhi-NCR have faced a significant decline in air quality after just one day of relief. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in various areas of Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad has entered the red zone, causing breathing difficulties for many.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), several locations recorded AQI levels surpassing 300, categorizing them as ‘very poor’. Notable readings include Anand Vihar at 334, Chandni Chowk at 323, Nehru Nagar at 329, Okhla Phase-2 at 310, Patparganj at 301, and R.K. Puram at 300. Punjabi Bagh recorded an AQI of 298, Rohini at 281, and Ashok Vihar at 287. In contrast, Ayanagar showed a relatively better AQI of 149, while Pusa (IMD) recorded 187.

Ghaziabad is also experiencing alarming air quality. Indirapuram reported an AQI of 332, Loni at 314, and Vasundhara at 318. Noida’s air quality remains severely poor, with Sector 125 at 304, Sector 1 at 307, and Sector 116 at 294, while Sector 62 recorded an AQI of 231.

The weather department indicates that significant improvement in conditions is unlikely in the coming days. On February 3, dense fog reduced visibility significantly, with maximum temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius and minimums at 8 degrees Celsius. Forecasts predict moderate fog on February 4 and 5, with maximum temperatures around 21 degrees and minimums at 9 degrees. Similar fog conditions are expected on February 6, 7, and 8.

Currently, maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, with minimums around 9 to 10 degrees. Although no warnings have been issued, residents are advised to exercise caution during morning and evening hours. Experts attribute the worsening air quality to cold winds, fog, and low wind speeds trapping pollutants in the atmosphere, exacerbated by snowfall in hilly regions due to a western disturbance. In the coming days, residents of NCR may continue to face foggy mornings and persistent cold throughout the day.
