Patna, February 19: The political landscape in Bihar is heating up as the Rajya Sabha elections approach. Both the NDA and the Grand Alliance are grappling with complex calculations regarding the five available seats. Akhtarul Iman, the state president of AIMIM, declared on Thursday that his party will field its own candidate instead of supporting any other party.
AIMIM is poised to play a significant role in this election, boasting five MLAs. During a media interaction, Iman expressed frustration over questions regarding support for other candidates. He stated, “Was I born to provide support? Why don’t you ask who will support me? Other parties have representatives in the Rajya Sabha, but AIMIM does not. We want to establish our presence.”
Iman further urged those opposing the divisive government and advocating for the rights of Dalits to strengthen the hands of Asaduddin Owaisi.
In Bihar’s 243-member assembly, a candidate requires the support of 41 MLAs to win. Currently, the NDA holds 202 MLAs, which positions them to easily secure four seats. Even after winning four, they will still need additional votes to claim the fifth seat if competition arises. The opposition, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal, forms the Grand Alliance.
The Grand Alliance has a total of 35 MLAs and will require support from other legislators to secure a seat. Additionally, AIMIM’s five MLAs and one from the Bahujan Samaj Party are not aligned with any coalition.
