Belagavi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : A surprising incident occurred in Karnataka’s Belagavi district on Saturday, where a driver was fined ₹500 for not wearing a helmet, thanks to a malfunctioning AI traffic camera. The driver, Subhash Bojane, a resident of Athani, was shocked to receive a WhatsApp notification from the Belagavi district traffic police informing him of the penalty.
The fine was issued for allegedly violating traffic rules at Ambedkar Circle in Athani while driving without a helmet. However, the AI-based traffic monitoring system mistakenly categorized his four-wheeler as a two-wheeler, leading to the erroneous charge.
To highlight this bizarre error and avoid further penalties, Bojane recorded a video of himself driving his car while wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet. He shared this video on social media, where it quickly gained traction, drawing attention to the AI system’s misidentification.
This incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Athani police station, prompting local drivers to express concerns about the reliability of automated traffic enforcement systems.
