Calcutta High Court Demands Report on Attacks Against Lawyers in West Bengal

Kolkata, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Calcutta High Court has called for a report from the West Bengal government concerning a series of attacks on lawyers in various regions of the state over the past few months. Chief Justice Ravindra Vitthalrao Ghuge instructed the state to submit the report by Friday.

On Thursday, a group of lawyers led by senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, a four-time Lok Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress, drew the court’s attention to an attack on senior lawyer and former CPI-M Rajya Sabha member, Debasish Bhattacharya, at his residence in Purbalok, near Jadavpur in South Kolkata.

Banerjee highlighted in court that lawyers who oppose the ruling party and the BJP government face constant threats and are enduring difficult times. Chief Justice Ghuge noted that the court had previously urged the police to enhance security measures within the High Court premises. He also appealed to the lawyers to maintain their trust in the court rather than resorting to work stoppages.

Rajdeep Majumdar, the state’s additional advocate general, reassured the court that the police would take action in such cases. He recalled incidents from the past when Justice Rajshekhar Mantha of the Calcutta High Court faced harassment during the tenure of the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee, including derogatory posters placed on the walls of his home in South Kolkata.

In a show of solidarity, Mamata Banerjee also expressed her support on social media regarding the early morning attack on Bhattacharya’s residence.
