Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart is gearing up to announce its flagship Big Billion Days Sale 2018 in October. The company is said to be started preparing for the Big Billion Days sale with plans to increase its delivery and warehousing workforce.
Currently, Flipkart employs around 30K-35K delivery and warehouse executives. According to industry sources, Flipkart is looking forward to triple its delivery and warehouse team to around 100,000, along with temporarily increasing the storage capacity as well.
The reports citing industry sources also claim that the company expects this year’s Big Billion Days sale to bring 80% higher sales than last year in gross merchandise value (GMV) and number of units sold. Flipkart reached an estimated $1.5 Bn in GMV during the Big Billion Days sale in 2017. The Big Billion Day (BBD) sale 2018 expected in the coming October.
“Big Billion Days is the biggest opportunity where the company can do one month’s number in just five days. They have already started hiring manpower as they need to be trained for 30-40 days to reach operational efficiency level,” the source said as per the reports.
The recent preparations for Big Billion Days sale are aimed at Flipkart’s target of tripling its sales to $17.6 billion by 2021 in order to stay in the competition with its rivals like Amazon India. Notably, Amazon India also hosts its Great India Sale during the same timeline.
As per industry estimates, as of now Flipkart has 34-35 warehouses across India while Amazon India has 41. This translates that Amazon India has about 3 million sq. ft. of storage capacity, while Flipkart has around 2-2.2 million sq. ft. capacity that usually goes up to at least 20% during the festive season through partnerships with other smaller warehouses.
As per a report by Forrester, a market analyst firm, Flipkart had the majority market share of 31.9% at the end of 2017, while Amazon India had 31.1%. Flipkart will be looking forward to expanding this number with this year’s Big Billion Days sale.
In order to prepare for this, Flipkart now plans to increase its ware capacity as well. Back in March this year, Flipkart had announced that it was working on a 100-acre area logistics park. Such big logistics park will help enhance its supply chain logistics and will also reduce the cost and time.
As for the delivery staff, companies have already started hiring delivery personnel for the festive seasons, as per industry experts. According to TeamLease HR consulting firm, around 26,000 delivery personnel were hired in 2017 during the peak festive season from August to December. This year the number is expected to jump to around 43,000 which doesn’t include the warehouse personnel.
