Agent Arrested for Assisting Killers of Bangladeshi Activist in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 15: The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police arrested an agent on Saturday who allegedly helped two killers of Bangladeshi activist Sharif Usman Hadi escape to West Bengal after the murder.

The arrested agent has been identified as Philip Sangma. He was apprehended in the Shantipur Bypass area of Nadia district.

According to police officials, on March 8, the STF had also arrested the accused, Rahul alias Faisal Karum Masood and Alamgir Hussain, in connection with Hadi’s murder. These two suspects fled from Bangladesh to West Bengal after the incident last December. They were captured in a village near the India-Bangladesh border in the Bongao subdivision of Nadia district.

During interrogation, Rahul and Alamgir revealed that Philip Sangma had helped them cross the border illegally in exchange for a substantial amount of money.

Based on intelligence inputs, the STF team conducted a raid in the Shantipur Bypass area on Saturday and arrested Sangma.

Police stated, “During questioning, Sangma admitted that he facilitated the illegal crossing of individuals from the Halurghat border area in Bangladesh and the Dalupara border in Meghalaya for money. He used this network to bring Hadi’s killers into West Bengal.”

Following his arrest, Sangma was presented in the district court on Saturday, where he was remanded to police custody.

It is noteworthy that Sharif Usman Hadi was shot in Dhaka last December. He was later taken to Singapore for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

Hadi’s death triggered widespread unrest in Bangladesh. The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has named Faisal and Alamgir as the main accused in the murder case in the charge sheet filed.
