Mumbai, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : Actor Suhail Nayyar is making headlines as he promotes his upcoming film, “Udata Teer.” During a promotional event, he shared his thoughts on the proposal to increase entertainment tax in Mumbai’s cinemas. Nayyar warned that if the proposed tax hike is implemented, movie ticket prices could rise significantly. However, he noted that this remains a proposal and could change.
In an interview, Nayyar stated, “I think movie tickets are going to become expensive. Even popcorn is more costly than the ticket itself.” He added, “I estimate that ticket prices might go up, but you never know; things keep changing. Right now, it’s just a proposal, and it might not even be implemented. We’ll see what happens next, and then we can discuss it further.”
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a staggering 570% increase in entertainment tax for cinemas and performing arts venues in Mumbai. This proposal is pending approval from the Maharashtra government’s Urban Development Department. Until the state government officially announces the new rates, the existing tax structure will remain in effect.
Under the proposed system, multiplexes could see the entertainment tax increase from ₹60 to ₹400 per show. For single-screen air-conditioned cinemas, the proposed tax is set at ₹200 per show. Additionally, there is a proposal to impose a ₹100 tax per show on drama, jalsa, and other entertainment programs.
The BMC aims to generate additional revenue through this proposal, targeting an annual increase of ₹400 to ₹500 crore from entertainment tax. However, the proposal includes exemptions for Marathi and Gujarati films, plays, and one-act performances. A final decision on the new rates has yet to be made.
Meanwhile, Nayyar is busy promoting “Udata Teer,” which has generated excitement among audiences. The film is set to hit theaters on October 9.
