New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections are set for September 18, where Yash Dabas from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) will compete against Vijay Shankar Meena from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) for the presidency.
On Friday, the deadline for candidate withdrawals passed, allowing a total of 25 candidates to contest for the president’s position after thorough scrutiny.
Voting will take place in two shifts on September 18, from 8:30 AM to 1 PM and again from 3 PM to 7:30 PM. Results will be announced the following day, with approximately 275,000 students eligible to cast their votes.
The ABVP has nominated Ishu Maurya for vice-president, Riya Chhaavdi for secretary, and Talakraj Singh for joint secretary. Yash Dabas hails from Kanjhawala in West Delhi, is a graduate of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, and is an internationally ranked tennis player.
NSUI, the student wing of the Indian National Congress, has put forward Veer Chhatraath for vice-president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary, and Gopal Chaudhary for joint secretary.
The DUSU elections hold special significance this year, following protests at Jantar Mantar in July over exam irregularities and the recent collapse of a PG building in Saty Niketan.
After the nomination scrutiny, 20 candidates were approved for vice-president, 24 for secretary, and 19 for joint secretary.
Traditionally, DUSU elections have been a contest between ABVP and NSUI, but other student organizations, including the Aam Aadmi Party and leftist groups, are also participating. The AAP’s Association of Students for Alternative Politics has nominated Ashmit Kumar Pawar for president and Pankaj Kumar for secretary. The left-backed All India Students Association (AISA) has fielded Ananya as its presidential candidate.
