Agartala, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Agartala hosted the first official meeting on September 11 to address the long-standing inter-state border dispute between Tripura and Mizoram. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that both states have agreed to advance the resolution process through mutual consent.
Saha revealed that he had previously initiated discussions with Mizoram to find a solution to the border issue. He mentioned that during the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Shillong on June 4, he had discussed the matter with Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.
“I proposed that an initial meeting at the official level take place, followed by discussions between both chief ministers to resolve the dispute. Chief Minister Zoramthanga promptly agreed to this proposal,” Saha stated.
During the meeting, it was decided to form two study committees aimed at examining the border dispute and related ground issues. These committees will conduct on-site inspections of the disputed areas and submit their findings. Following the receipt of the reports, another meeting at the official level will be scheduled.
Tripura’s Home Secretary Abhishek Singh and Mizoram’s Home Secretary Vanlalmawia led their respective delegations during the discussions.
Tripura shares its borders with Bangladesh to the south, west, and north, while it has a 53-kilometer border with Assam and a 109-kilometer inter-state boundary with Mizoram.
The border dispute has persisted for years, with both states frequently objecting whenever development or construction activities are initiated in contested areas.
In May 2025, an incident in the Phuldungsei village of North Tripura saw unidentified attackers throw medium-intensity explosives at a tourism building under the Ministry of Tourism’s ‘Swadesh Darshan’ scheme, causing significant damage. Following this event, the police from both states conducted a joint visit to the area, and additional security forces were deployed to maintain peace.
Local residents from both states have long claimed that Phuldungsei village falls within both Tripura and Mizoram’s boundaries, making it one of the most sensitive disputed regions. In the aftermath of the incident, the Tripura government officially raised the matter with Mizoram. Over the past few years, multiple rounds of discussions have occurred between the administrations of North Tripura and Mizoram’s Mamit district, as well as officials from the Survey of India, regarding the disputed border areas.
