Abhishek Banerjee Casts Vote in Bhawanipur, Criticizes BJPs Hollow Predictions

Kolkata, April 29: Political rhetoric intensified during the second phase of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Abhishek Banerjee, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Member of Parliament, cast his vote at the Mitra Institute polling station in Bhawanipur. He expressed confidence in his party’s victory while sharply responding to claims made by the BJP.

Reacting to the BJP’s assertions of a “clean sweep” in West Bengal, Banerjee noted that such claims have been made before, only to be proven wrong in the results. He referenced the 2021 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, stating that BJP leaders’ predictions have never materialized.

He cited past statements from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who claimed in 2021 that the BJP would secure 200 seats. Instead, the TMC won over 200 seats. Similarly, the BJP’s predictions in the Lok Sabha elections also fell flat.

Banerjee remarked that the BJP’s current claim of winning 177 seats is likely to be an overestimation, given their “track record.” He expressed optimism that the TMC would perform even better this time, securing a larger mandate than in 2021, along with an increase in their vote percentage.

Targeting the BJP, he stated that the party’s focus on international issues should be redirected to the people of Bengal. He accused the BJP of failing to understand the needs of the Bengal populace. Banerjee urged voters to turn out in large numbers to give the TMC a strong mandate, ensuring that opposition parties think twice before attempting any injustice against the state in the future.

He also mentioned that the first phase of voting had been positive for his party, claiming they had already surpassed the “century” mark. Banerjee accused the BJP of discouraging high voter turnout and participation in the democratic process.

Additionally, he raised concerns about the influx of “outsiders,” asserting that the more the BJP attempts to influence Bengal with external elements, the more detrimental it will be for the party.
