Pennsylvania, May 18: Indian-origin English golfer Aaron Rai has clinched his first PGA Championship title in 2026. With a remarkable performance at the Aronimink Golf Club, Rai has become the first English golfer to win the PGA Championship since 1919. The last English player to achieve this was Jim Barnes.
Rai’s victory at Aronimink has now placed him among the newest major champions in golf. This win is considered one of the most memorable final-round performances of the season.
Starting the final round with a slight lead, Rai’s stunning birdie putt on the 17th hole (par-3) ultimately determined the tournament’s outcome. Under the pressure of a significant title, he successfully made a challenging 68-foot putt, pulling three shots ahead of his competitors.
This moment provided the Wolverhampton-born golfer with considerable relief as he approached the 18th hole, where a calm and composed par finish secured both the championship and the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy.
Rai concluded the week at nine-under-par, finishing three shots ahead of a group tied for second place. Alex Smalley, who led after the third round, scored even-par in the final round and ended at six-under, alongside Jon Rahm, who shot two-under (68) on Sunday.
Mattie Schmid, who started the final day as Rai’s closest rival, fell behind in the decisive round and ultimately tied for third place with Ludwig Åberg and Justin Thomas at five-under.
The 2026 season has been quite tumultuous for Rai. This title win marks a dramatic comeback on one of golf’s biggest stages.
After his victory, the 31-year-old Rai expressed, “It all feels like a dream. This season has been quite disappointing, so standing here today is beyond my imagination. Golf is a wonderful game. It teaches you so many things. It instills humility, discipline, and the importance of hard work, as nothing comes easy in this sport, regardless of your level or the course you play. It offers valuable life lessons. Almost every player on tour is an incredible person. The game should take pride in the ambassadors representing the PGA Tour and PGA of America.”
