99-Year-Old Dr. HV Hande Casts Vote, PM Modi Calls It a Significant Message for Youth

New Delhi, April 23: Voter enthusiasm was high during the first phase of voting in West Bengal and across all seats in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Political parties made concerted efforts to encourage maximum voter turnout at polling booths. In a notable moment, 99-year-old Dr. HV Hande cast his vote, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to describe it as a vital message for the youth.

Dr. Hande, a five-time legislator and former health minister in the MGR cabinet, is a recipient of the Dr. B.C. Roy Award. Despite his age, he visited the polling center and shared a photo on social media, stating that voting is not just a right but also a responsibility towards the future.

On the social media platform X, Dr. Hande wrote, “At 99 years old, I have witnessed my country finding its voice, and today, I used my voice. I voted for the first time in 1946 as a medical student. Voting is not just a right; it is our responsibility for the future we leave behind. Your vote matters. Get out and vote.”

Prime Minister Modi responded to Dr. Hande’s post, calling it an inspiring message for the youth. He reposted Dr. Hande’s message, expressing hope that a significant number of young people would vote today to strengthen democracy.

Voting for the first phase in West Bengal began at 7 AM across 152 assembly seats in 16 districts. These districts include Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda in North Bengal, as well as Murshidabad, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum in South Bengal. The second phase of elections for the remaining 142 assembly seats in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29.

In Tamil Nadu, voting took place for all 234 assembly seats in a single phase. Strict security measures were implemented at all polling centers, and the voting process proceeded peacefully. The election commission urged voters to participate in this grand festival of democracy by casting their votes in large numbers.
