Mysuru, August 31: In a significant move, Karnataka’s Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, has ordered the transfer of Shanthamma, the superintendent of Mandya District Jail. This action follows allegations that an undertrial prisoner received special privileges.
Shanthamma has been directed to report immediately to Bellary Central Jail on special duty until further notice. The relevant jail superintendent has also been instructed to submit a compliance report to headquarters regarding Shanthamma’s handover of duties and her new assignment.
The decision comes in connection with undertrial officer Mohammad Hussain, who is incarcerated for his involvement in a land scam. Reports suggest that Hussain was shifted to Mandya MIMS Hospital under the pretext of back pain, despite having no medical condition.
During his hospital stay, Hussain was allegedly found with his girlfriend, a discovery made during a visit by Mandya District Sessions Judge C. Chandrashekar. It was revealed that the prisoner had been admitted to the hospital without notifying the court. Judge Chandrashekar questioned Shanthamma about this incident.
This situation has surfaced amid accusations of irregularities in the operations of Mandya Jail. A petition signed by approximately 80 inmates surfaced in the media, alleging a ‘rate list’ for various facilities within the jail.
The petition included signatures, thumbprints, and details of undertrial prisoner numbers. It purportedly detailed monthly payments related to specific jail accommodations and other amenities. Following these allegations, action has been taken against Superintendent Shanthamma.
Previously, a police constable was suspended for allegedly providing VIP treatment to a prisoner. It was claimed that Constable Chandan allowed the inmate Hasan to stay in a ward with his girlfriend for medical treatment. Consequently, Constable Chandan of the District Armed Reserve (DAR) was suspended for negligence in duty.
