New Delhi, February 16: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly confronted Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Zelensky has been targeting Orban repeatedly. Initially, he made a remark about Orban’s “bulging belly,” and now he has taken another jab during the Munich Security Conference.
In Munich on Saturday, Zelensky received an annual award for his “remarkable” contributions to peace. While accepting the Ewald von Kleist Award, the Ukrainian leader expressed gratitude to his European sponsors, particularly the largest donors, Germany and the UK, for their support in the fight for Kyiv.
Before attacking the Hungarian Prime Minister, he stated, “We are very grateful to have such partners and friends. And I want to thank Viktor as well. You all know who I mean, as he inspires us all to become better. Better, so that we never become like him, someone who has forgotten the meaning of the word ‘shame’.”
According to EU institutions, since the escalation of conflict in February 2022, EU member states have collectively provided Kyiv with €134 billion ($159 billion) in aid. While presenting the award, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk remarked that Ukraine deserves more and that even the Nobel Peace Prize would not be too valuable.
Previously, Zelensky had suggested that Orban should focus on expanding his military rather than his waistline to counter the alleged Russian threat.
Orban, who has long criticized EU support for Kyiv, responded on the social media platform X, stating that Zelensky’s comments illustrate why Ukraine cannot become a member of the European Union. He added that the Ukrainian leader’s statements would help clarify the situation for the Hungarian people.
The Hungarian Prime Minister has consistently opposed Ukraine’s bid to join the bloc and has repeatedly refused to approve arms shipments or EU military assistance.
In January, Orban referred to Zelensky as a man caught in a difficult situation. He emphasized that Hungary would continue to supply electricity and fuel despite the conflict and would assist Ukrainian refugees.
