
Kanpur, August 12: The Kanpur police in Uttar Pradesh arrested a 19-year-old man on Wednesday. He is accused of stealing jewelry and cash worth 1.6 million rupees from a neighbor’s home to fund his sister’s wedding.
On August 10, police received a report from the victim, Sofia, stating that her gold jewelry, including bangles, chains, earrings, and rings, had been stolen during the day. The estimated value of the stolen items was between 1.5 to 1.6 million rupees.
Following the report, a police team from the Jajmau area, along with forensic and surveillance teams, arrived at the scene. They discovered that the thief had broken in through a window on the roof.
The police questioned neighbors and reviewed CCTV footage, which led to the identification of a suspect named Zafar. During interrogation, Zafar confessed to the theft, and all stolen items were recovered from his home.
Zafar admitted that he committed the theft to acquire gold jewelry for his sister’s wedding. He was aware that the victim’s family was away, making it an opportune time for the crime.
Additionally, police recovered 1,020 rupees in cash from Zafar, who had spent approximately 7,000 rupees on servicing his vehicle. The investigation and further actions related to the case are ongoing.
