Guwahati, August 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government anticipates spending over ₹1,000 crore on repairing properties damaged by floods and on the rehabilitation of affected families.
During a press conference in Guwahati, CM Sarma stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support for the rehabilitation process and has directed the government to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damages.
Sarma mentioned, “A rapid relief assessment campaign was launched on August 9 to provide permanent relief. The initial assessment has included over 8,000 families, estimating damages at around ₹150 crore.”
He added that the assessment will continue until August 30, with expectations to include approximately 50,000 to 60,000 affected families.
The Chief Minister noted that the final assessment could significantly increase the estimated financial requirements.
“I believe that the costs for repairs and rehabilitation will exceed ₹1,000 crore. The Prime Minister has assured that there will be no issues in compensating the affected families, and we have been asked to conduct the assessment without any lapses,” he stated.
Sarma also praised individuals and organizations that have contributed to relief efforts. He highlighted that 72 YouTubers from various parts of the country have raised funds for flood relief, with many already engaged in on-ground assistance.
“We are closely monitoring them to ensure that the funds are spent in the flood-affected areas,” he added.
Additionally, he announced ₹11.3 crore for the reconstruction of 494 Anganwadi centers damaged in Upper Assam.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that children and families receive essential services without interruption, urging for the swift restoration of these centers. Each damaged center will receive up to ₹2.5 lakh for restoration.
