New Delhi, April 5: Cam Schlittler is making waves in the 2026 MLB season with an impressive performance. One key factor behind his success is his mastery of a pitching technique once utilized by Yankees legend Mariano Rivera. This technique revolves around the cutter.
Schlittler’s cutter has transformed into a formidable pitch this season. According to MLB.com’s David Adler, “Schlittler was already throwing a cutter as a rookie, and it was a pretty darn good one. But in his sophomore season, he’s tweaked the grip for that cutter, and it looks like a much different pitch.”
This year, Schlittler’s cutter averages over 94 mph, a significant increase from 92 mph last season. It also exhibits impressive carry through the strike zone, reminiscent of pitchers like Kenley Jansen and peak Corbin Burnes.
So far, Schlittler has not allowed a run in 11.2 innings, striking out 15 batters. His WHIP stands at an astonishing 0.26, and he holds a 2-0 record. Hitters are struggling against Schlittler’s pitches, including his revamped cutter, which he has thrown 29.9% of the time—up from 19.7% last year. Notably, opponents have yet to record a hit off this pitch.
If Schlittler maintains this level of effectiveness alongside his other pitches, his cutter will become a significant asset to his game.
