World Humanitarian Day: Honoring Sacrifices and Advocating for Safety

New Delhi, August 18: Every year on August 19, World Humanitarian Day is observed, also known as World Humanitarian Day. The purpose of this day is to remember, honor, and pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of humanity amidst wars, crises, pandemics, and disasters. This day is dedicated to recognizing the efforts of humanitarian workers and aid providers.

Many wonder why World Humanitarian Day is celebrated specifically on August 19 and not on another date. The reason dates back to 2003 when a major terrorist attack occurred at the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, on this day. The attack resulted in the deaths of 22 humanitarian aid workers.

Among the victims was Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq. Five years later, in 2008, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to designate August 19 as World Humanitarian Day. Since then, this day has been commemorated annually.

On this day, we honor all the brave workers who risk their lives to save others amidst wars, natural disasters, pandemics, and violence. The primary goal of World Humanitarian Day is to raise awareness about humanitarian aid activities and international cooperation worldwide. This day emphasizes the need for the safety of aid workers and adherence to international humanitarian laws.

As we remember the sacrifices of aid workers, we also advocate for the safety of those in crisis. Awareness campaigns are conducted, and individuals working for humanity on a global scale are honored.
