New Delhi, May 6: World Athletics Day is celebrated globally on May 7. This day is dedicated to promoting awareness of athletics, a sport that encompasses various track and field events such as running, jumping, walking, and throwing. Athletics includes over two dozen different categories of sports.
The inception of World Athletics Day dates back to 1996, initiated by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). In 2001, the organization rebranded itself as the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The IAAF is responsible for organizing all international athletics events and has the authority to establish rules and regulations associated with the sport. It sets guidelines concerning age restrictions, gender-related issues, and doping regulations. The age-related rules are straightforward, allowing athletes to compete against others of similar capabilities. Doping cases are managed under specific guidelines by an anti-doping agency.
The rationale behind celebrating World Athletics Day is to highlight the significance of athletics for a better world. The IAAF launched this initiative as a social responsibility. Each year, this special day is observed in schools and colleges worldwide under the leadership of the IAAF, featuring various sports events.
The primary objectives of World Athletics Day include fostering interest in athletics among youth, promoting physical health and fitness, instilling discipline, patience, and competitive spirit through athletics, and enhancing global participation in sports.
In India, the importance of athletics is growing daily. Athletes are increasingly participating in various competitions at state and national levels, making their mark in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games, thereby bringing pride to the nation.
The Indian government has also launched initiatives like “Khelo India” to promote athletics in villages and provide a platform for local talents on national and international stages, which is steadily gaining success.
Moreover, athletes like Neeraj Chopra and Mirabai Chanu have played a significant role in attracting youth to athletics through their Olympic successes.
