Kapil Dev Advocates for Support of All Sports Beyond Cricket

Hyderabad, August 29: Former Indian cricket captain and President of the Professional Golf Tour of India, Kapil Dev, emphasized the need to support sports other than cricket. He believes that athletes in various sports work just as hard.

Speaking at the Telangana Golconda Masters tournament, which starts on September 1, Kapil Dev stated, “I played cricket and loved it. There’s no doubt that cricket has given me everything in this world. However, I feel we should also promote and support other sports, as their players put in a lot of effort. I do not want to compare other sports with cricket, but when you see the popularity and attention cricket receives, it’s clear that other sports need to reach that level. This can only happen if the media starts focusing more on them.”

The captain who led India to its first World Cup victory expressed regret for not starting golf earlier. He urged everyone to engage in some form of sport. Highlighting the benefits of golf, Kapil said, “I want to emphasize that I never refused to play golf. If I had played golf while playing cricket, I might have scored an additional 2,000 runs. I encourage everyone to try other sports. It enhances your focus and develops a different kind of temperament. I regret not playing golf while I was playing cricket. I advise all cricketers to play golf at least once a week. It changes your temperament, which is essential.”

In conversation with the media, Kapil described Hyderabad as a city that loves sports. He remarked, “Hyderabad is a beautiful city that embraces sports, attracting many sports personalities. While we know Hyderabad for its cricketers, we are now also seeing golfers, badminton players, and tennis players. I am delighted to be here for this tournament and hope the best player wins.”
