New Delhi, April 26: The Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2008, with the inaugural match played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In that match, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum scored a stunning century, amassing 158 runs off just 73 balls, including 13 sixes and 10 fours.
McCullum’s innings set the tone for the future of T20 and IPL, which has grown more spectacular with each passing year. Following his century, the league has seen a consistent stream of high-scoring performances.
The 2024 season marked the 17th edition of the IPL, featuring a record-breaking 14 centuries. This surpassed the previous record of 12 centuries set in IPL 2023.
In IPL 2024, notable players such as Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Travis Head, Sai Sudharsan, Sunil Narine, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Marcus Stoinis, Suryakumar Yadav, Jonny Bairstow, and Will Jacks each scored a century, while Jos Buttler achieved two.
As we enter the 19th season in 2026, the trend of centuries continues. The pressing question remains: will this season break the record for the most centuries in IPL history?
So far, in IPL 2026, there have been 8 centuries across 36 matches. If 7 more centuries are scored in the remaining matches, the record of 14 centuries from IPL 2024 will be shattered.
The players who have hit centuries in IPL 2026 include Sanju Samson from Chennai Super Kings (2), Tilak Varma from Mumbai Indians (1), Vaibhav Surya from Rajasthan Royals (1), Abhishek Sharma from Sunrisers Hyderabad (1), Quinton de Kock from Mumbai Indians (1), KL Rahul from Delhi Capitals (1), and Sai Sudharsan from Gujarat Titans (1).
With 38 matches still to be played before the finals, it will be exciting to see which batsman adds to their tally and whether the record for the most centuries set in IPL 2024 will be broken.
