New York, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Alexander Zverev has secured his place in the third round of the US Open men’s singles tournament. In a fiercely contested five-set match, the German player triumphed over France’s Quentin Halys.
The match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, lasted 4 hours and 53 minutes, ending with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3. Zverev, who also won his first-round match in five sets, took some time to find his rhythm against Halys but ultimately claimed victory. Throughout the match, Zverev faced challenges with his backhand and serve but capitalized on crucial moments, improving his performance as the match progressed. Halys, on the other hand, struggled in key moments, which cost him dearly.
Zverev is determined to win the US Open, competing as a top seed in a major tournament for the first time. His next opponent will be the 25th seed, Alejandro Tabilo, a familiar name in American tennis. Last year, Zverev defeated the Chilean player in the first round of the US Open, improving his ATP head-to-head record against him to 2-0.
Tabilo, who has three titles to his name, prefers clay as his favorite surface. In their previous encounter during the 2024 Rome semifinals, Zverev faced a tough challenge, losing the first set but rallying to win the second in a tiebreak, ultimately securing victory in three sets.
Zverev has been outstanding this season in major tournaments. He reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, won the French Open title, and competed in the Wimbledon final. He is the first male player to achieve 20 wins in Grand Slam events this year, bringing his overall record to an impressive 20-2.
