Bhopal, April 27: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is set to launch a wild buffalo rehabilitation program on Tuesday. Following global acclaim for the cheetah project, this initiative aims to reintroduce a species that has been extinct in the state for over a century.
According to a press release, the official launch will take place in the Supkhar and Topla regions of Balaghat district, where CM Mohan Yadav will release a founding group of three female and one male buffalo into their new natural habitat.
This ambitious transfer project involves bringing 50 wild buffaloes from Assam’s Kaziranga National Park to the Kanha Tiger Reserve. The first phase has already begun, with plans to relocate eight buffaloes during the current season.
The project is being implemented with scientific precision under the supervision of senior forest officials and expert veterinarians from both states. The press release stated that this initiative is expected to significantly strengthen the ecosystem of Kanha’s grasslands and restore the vital ecological balance disrupted by hunting and habitat loss over the past century.
In addition to the buffaloes’ reintroduction, a comprehensive biodiversity exchange has been established between Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Under an agreement between CM Mohan Yadav and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Madhya Pradesh will receive two pairs of rhinos for the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.
In exchange, Madhya Pradesh will provide Assam with three tigers and six crocodiles, marking the beginning of a new era of inter-state cooperation in wildlife management. This strategic partnership further solidifies Madhya Pradesh’s leading position in conservation and enhances its reputation as a state rich in tigers and leopards.
The Supkhar sanctuary area within the vast Kanha Tiger Reserve is an ideal pristine hill grassland for rare herbivores. With its expansive rolling grasslands and perennial water streams, this region offers a secluded environment for the rehabilitation of wild buffaloes.
Its historical significance is noteworthy, as this was the last location where wild buffaloes were sighted in 1979.
