Wholesale Inflation Surges to 11.39% in September 2026 Amid Rising Costs

Wholesale inflation in India rose to 11.39% in September 2026, driven by increases in primary goods, fuel, and manufactured products.

New Delhi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Wholesale inflation in India has seen a significant rise, reaching 11.39% in September 2026, up from 9.92% in August. This surge, reported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, reflects ongoing pressures from rising costs and raw material prices.

This marks the second consecutive month of rising wholesale inflation. The combined Wholesale Price Index (WPI) of all items climbed to 112.5 in September, compared to 110.8 in August.

The inflationary pressure is not confined to a single sector. Price increases have been observed across primary goods, fuel and energy, and the manufacturing sector. Specifically, inflation for primary goods stood at 8.67%, while fuel and energy surged to 25.85%, and manufactured products increased by 9.76%. In August, these rates were 7.76%, 22.93%, and 8.37%, respectively, indicating widespread cost pressures throughout various levels of the production chain.

The index for primary goods was recorded at 120.3, fuel and energy at 110.5, and manufactured products at 110.2, all higher than their August figures. Key contributors to the rise in wholesale inflation included increases in the prices of mineral oils, food items, crude petroleum and natural gas, coal and lignite, basic metals, chemicals, textiles, rubber and plastic products, and electrical equipment.

Food inflation remains a particular concern. The WPI Food Index, which encompasses both primary and manufactured food products, increased by 8.66% year-on-year in September, up from 7.05% in August. This suggests continued cost pressures within the food supply chain, which may eventually impact retail inflation.

Additionally, the Output Producer Price Index (PPI) also rose to 112.5 in September, compared to 110.8 in August. Increases in producer prices were noted in agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining, and manufacturing, while the electricity sector’s index remained relatively low. The Input Producer Price Index (IPPI) for manufacturing was recorded at 106.1 in September, reflecting the pressure of raw material and input costs on industries.

The government also released revised figures for July 2026, showing that the WPI index remained unchanged at 110.0, with an inflation rate of 9.78%. Similarly, the revised output PPI for July remained stable at 109.9.
