WhatsApp Introduces Optional Username Feature Amid Government Scrutiny

New Delhi, July 2: WhatsApp has released a FAQ regarding its new username feature, clarifying that it is optional and not mandatory.

In the FAQ shared on social media, WhatsApp emphasized that just as users cannot search for an unknown phone number, they also cannot search for usernames.

To prevent unwanted contacts, all existing measures will remain in place. These include warnings about unknown message senders, such as whether they are new accounts, if users share groups, or their country of origin, along with options to block and report.

The company advised users that the best way to prevent unwanted contact is to add a unique username. If a username is already in use by someone on Instagram or Facebook, it will be reserved for that user.

WhatsApp also addressed claims regarding the reservation of popular usernames, stating that only verified account owners can reserve names of well-known public figures.

The reservation feature has been launched ahead of the username rollout planned for later this year, as the company believes users will be excited to choose their desired usernames. They are taking their time to ensure everything is perfect based on user feedback.

However, the Indian government has currently halted the rollout of the new username feature on WhatsApp. The government instructed WhatsApp to provide information about the feature within three days and to refrain from launching it until discussions with the government are complete.
