Competitive Industry Moves

  • Arm Holdings: Moving beyond its licensing model, Arm is now focusing on in-house chipmaking and has hired Rami Sinno (Amazon’s former AI chip director) to lead the initiative. Arm’s strategy is to reinvest profits into building complete chips and chiplets, targeting expansion in smartphones and data centers—directly challenging AMD, Nvidia, and Intel.

  • Nvidia: To maintain its presence in China (which made up 13% of its 2024 revenue), Nvidia is developing new AI chips like the B30A and RTX6000D that comply with U.S. export controls but still deliver high performance. These chips are expected to ship test samples by September.

  • Intel: Intel received a $2 billion investment from SoftBank (at $23/share), making SoftBank Intel’s sixth-largest shareholder. The U.S. government is reportedly considering acquiring a 10% stake for national security, as Intel works to recover from heavy losses and competitive setbacks.

Analyst Commentary on AMD

  • Goldman Sachs (James Schneider): Praised AMD’s strength in data center GPUs but cautioned about scaling challenges and high investor expectations, estimating $10–11 billion in data center GPU revenue by 2026.

  • KeyBanc (John Vinh): Noted strong demand in premium desktop and commercial sectors, and a successful ramp-up of AMD’s MI355.

  • Wedbush (Matt Bryson): Pointed to continued uncertainty in China but highlighted AMD’s positive momentum in client and server markets, which could offset weak GPU results.

  • Benchmark (Cody Acree): Emphasized market share gains in data center and client markets, the ramp-up of new AI GPUs, and projected double-digit growth in Q3.

Stock Performance

  • Year-to-date, AMD is up 42%, outpacing Nvidia (35%) and Intel (30%+), but high valuation has analysts divided on the potential for further upside.
