Kolkata, May 18: Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the launch of the ‘Vivekananda Merit Scholarship’ for outstanding students on Monday. He stated that West Bengal’s education system will now align with the National Education Policy (NEP).
While addressing a felicitation ceremony for top secondary and higher secondary students at the Dhanodhan Hall in Kolkata, the Chief Minister outlined his government’s plans for comprehensive reforms in the state’s education system.
He mentioned that the newly formed government has already decided to implement the NEP in the state. He emphasized that financial barriers will not hinder higher education for deserving students.
According to Adhikari, as part of efforts to modernize the state’s educational infrastructure, the government aims to bring at least one school in each block under the PM Shri project.
He stated that through the modernization of government educational institutions, smart schools, smart classrooms, modern laboratories, and advanced libraries will be developed.
Expressing concern about the condition of government schools, the Chief Minister noted that while nearly 90% of the population relies on the government education system, it still lags behind private institutions in terms of infrastructure and competition.
He emphasized that the current government is focusing on improving both infrastructure and the quality of education in government institutions.
The Chief Minister also addressed private educational institutions operating in the state. He highlighted the government’s support for private educational initiatives while stressing the need for transparency and accountability in admission and evaluation processes. He urged that families should not face difficulties when it comes to fee collection.
Adhikari assured that his government will prioritize removing political influence from educational institutions and granting universities greater autonomy.
He also promised to create a conducive academic environment through adequate teacher participation in schools and colleges.
