Kolkata, June 4: West Bengal police have arrested another councillor from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). This brings the total number of KMC councillors arrested for corruption and criminal cases to four.
The arrested councillor, Biswajit Mandal, represents Ward Number 114. He was taken into custody in connection with an incident that occurred in 2024 at Regent Park, where a woman was reportedly harassed and assaulted.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, police apprehended Arijit Das Thakur, the councillor for Ward Number 106. He faces allegations of extorting money from local promoters and businessmen. A written complaint indicated that he had been attempting to collect money by interfering in construction and business matters in the area for an extended period.
Following an initial investigation that confirmed the allegations, police arrested him. Officers from the Garfa police station had summoned the councillor for questioning, and after extensive interrogation, he was taken into custody.
On the same day, police also arrested Sachin Singh, a Trinamool councillor from Ward Number 36. According to sources from Lalbazar (Kolkata Police Headquarters), he is accused of extortion. The Narikel Danga police station went to arrest Sachin on Tuesday afternoon, during which local residents protested outside his home. They alleged that Sachin was involved in intimidating and assaulting opponents.
Police sources indicated that Sachin is also accused of participating in electoral violence following the announcement of the state assembly election results in 2021. That same year, he won the KMC elections for the first time on a Trinamool Congress ticket. On May 23, the Thakurpukur police arrested Sudip Pole, a Trinamool councillor from Ward Number 123 and chairman of Borough Number 16, in connection with an extortion case.
