
New Delhi, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Domestic air passenger traffic in India witnessed a decline of 6.34% in August, totaling 12.1 million travelers compared to the previous year. SpiceJet, which has faced operational challenges, saw its market share decrease from 1.6% in July to 1.2% in August, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday.
The market share trends among major airlines varied during this period. Air India increased its share from 24% in July to 26.7% in August, while IndiGo’s share fell from 67.4% to 65%. Akasa Air maintained its market share at 5.5%.
Despite losing market share, IndiGo remained the leader in the domestic aviation sector, transporting 7.88 million passengers in August. Following IndiGo, the Air India group held a market share of 26.7%, carrying 3.23 million passengers. Akasa Air retained its third position with a 5.5% market share, serving 668,000 travelers.
SpiceJet reported carrying 140,000 passengers during the month but faced several operational issues that resulted in delayed flights.
In terms of on-time performance, IndiGo led among major airlines with a rate of 91%, followed closely by Akasa Air at 90.5%. The Air India group achieved 83.9% on-time performance, while Alliance Air recorded a rate of 71.8%.
Earlier, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the DGCA is closely monitoring SpiceJet’s financial and operational performance amid ongoing challenges. The regulator has been tasked with reviewing both the operational and financial status of the airline to ensure aviation safety is not compromised.
