Water Storage Levels in Gujarat Show Significant Improvement

Gandhinagar, May 4: Gujarat’s major reservoirs are experiencing a notable increase in water levels this year. As of Sunday, total water storage has reached 59.75 percent, which is approximately 9 percent higher than the same time last year, according to the Water Resources Department.

This increase follows an above-average monsoon, with the state recording over 128 percent rainfall. Consequently, the availability of water for drinking and irrigation has improved significantly.

The department stated, “Good and abundant rainfall has ensured sufficient water availability in the state’s major reservoirs.”

Current data indicates that Gujarat’s key reservoirs hold 5.32 lakh million cubic feet of water. The department also reported a total increase of 9.04 percent in water availability compared to last year. Notably, the Sardar Sarovar Dam has seen a 12.18 percent increase in water storage from the previous year.

The Sardar Sarovar, often referred to as the lifeline of Gujarat, is currently filled to 72.33 percent of its capacity, equating to 2.41 lakh million cubic feet of water.

Regionally, central Gujarat has the highest water storage at 59.52 percent, followed by southern Gujarat at 54.13 percent and northern Gujarat at 49.11 percent. However, Saurashtra and Kutch are lagging, with storage levels at 43.45 percent and 37.12 percent, respectively.

Officials have also highlighted the efforts in water management, stating, “Effective water conservation and management practices have consistently increased the availability of water for drinking and irrigation in the state.”

Comparing to last year, total water storage on May 3, 2025, was at 50.71 percent (4.52 lakh million cubic feet). At that time, northern Gujarat had 32.35 percent, central Gujarat 49.09 percent, southern Gujarat 51.05 percent, Saurashtra 32.45 percent, and Kutch 33.61 percent water storage.

At that point, the Sardar Sarovar held over 60.15 percent capacity, which is more than 2 lakh million cubic feet of water.

The new figures indicate that water storage has improved across all regions compared to last year, attributed to increased rainfall and enhanced water conservation measures.
